Emergency meeting called over Supercoat closure

25/07/2008 5:00:00 AM
AN emergency meeting to attract new business and additional jobs will take place on Monday at Inverell Shire Council.

The meeting has been called because of the announcement on Tuesday that the Supercoat Petcare factory will close in March.

Member for Northern Tablelands Richard Torbay, Inverell Shire Mayor Barry Johnston, a representative from New England MP Tony Windsor’s office, Inverell Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Andrew Cleaver, Supercoat plant manager Wes Sims and Nestle Purina general manager David Grant will attend the meeting at the Inverell Shire Council Chambers.

Mr Torbay called the meeting after speaking with Mr Grant in Armidale on Wednesday to discuss the issues that the closure will cause.

He has approached the State Government to broker a joint deal with Nestle to establish a fund in Inverell to attract new investment to the town.

The fund will be used in an attempt to attract replacement industry and jobs.

Mr Torbay said he was disappointed at the decision which will create a loss of 170 jobs including 58 permanent positions and affect many Inverell businesses that supply the factory including freight companies.

“Whilst it is the right of a private sector company to make its own decisions it is disappointing for the Inverell community which has shown such strong loyalty and support for the venture over many years,” he said.

“I spoke with the Minister for Regional Development Tony Kelly today and have asked for State Government assistance to help with the transition and create new business and job opportunities.

“If we can establish this fund it should be managed in partnership with the Inverell Council and the Growing Inverell Committee.

“Workers and their families and local businesses including freight companies will be left out on a limb unless action begins now, all options and new opportunities should be explored.

“We have up to eight months up our sleeve and I look forward to a robust discussion on the best way forward for the Inverell community at Monday’s meeting.”

Cr Johnston said he would be going into the meeting with a request for a compensation package from Nestle.

“They made assurances and they’ve let us down,” Mr Johnston said.

“That’s not something we’re just going to take lightly.

“It is disheartening because it is going to have a flow on effect in the community.

“We need to have this meeting to figure our what relief can be provided and what we can extract from Nestle.

“The fact that David Grant met with us on numerous occasions and was strong in his praise of Inverell also makes this a huge shock.

“They picked up our Supercoat brand about 16 months ago and have now used our expertise and are now relocating hundreds of kilometres away.

“It is going to have a disastrous effect on our economy and our lives.

“It is devastating.

“We all need to work together to get through this.”

Mr Grant said Nestle was fully supportive of the initiative and was keen to attend Monday’s meeting.
