Entrance signs reflect a sense of place

7/08/2008 10:16:00 AM
NEW entrance signs to welcome visitors to Glen Innes will be erected from the middle of the month.

The first signs, designed and made by Danthonia Designs of Swan Vale, will be erected on the southern approach to town opposite Cool Climate Garden Centre and from the north, near Kilkenny Place. The eastern entrance sign will be placed near the entrance to Centennial Parklands in consultation with the Australian Standing Stones Management Board. Entrance signs to the west of the town, and for the parks will be erected in the next financial year.

In her report to council, Manager of Economic Development and Tourism Wendy Fahey said the signs reflected council’s commitment to town beautification and economic growth, and suggested all future entrance, village and attraction signs be in keeping with the new designs.

The designs reflect the district’s heritage, culture, seasonality and indigenous links. At the base, the imprint of the Plane tree leaf conveys the seasons; a Celtic symbol in the top left hand corner promotes Glen Innes’ Celtic heritage. The use of the colour blue on the sign connects to the sapphires of the region and are the colours of the Glen Innes tartan, while the rich soil is represented by the use of the colour brown. The sign also acknowledges the Ngoorabul people as traditional custodians of the land.
