IT was a double celebration at the Inverell Community Kitchen on Wednesday.
Not only was it the kitchen’s one year anniversary of opening, they also celebrated Father Bernie Frize and Beryce Williams’ 70th birthdays.
More than 50 people enjoyed a three-course lunch of pumpkin soup, spaghetti and meatballs as well as coconut slice and ice cream for dessert cooked by chef Bill Floyd.
The Community Kitchen, which operates from the Uniting Church Hall in Ross St every Wednesday, originated as a soup kitchen and is now one of the best lunch venues in town offering an affordable three-course meal, paid for by donation to anyone who wants to go.
Special guest Bruce Clarke spoke on behalf of New England MP Tony Windsor.
“My congratulations go to Margaret Bottom one of the original founders and Chef Bill Floyd for nor only providing this once a week lunch experience to all, but also offering a training opportunity in hospital, communication, socialisation and interaction to those with special needs within the Inverell community,” Mr Clarke said.
“I congratulate all the volunteer staff who wait the tables and help prepare the meals under the watchful eye of Chef Bill.
“I also wish to thank Jeanette Beauman for providing for the kitchen through the Linking Together South Inverell Residents Association and the continuing support from Edie Wetzler, Carol Falconer, Karen and Viv Dickson from the Northern Tablelands Community programs as well as Christine Holding and Shirley Marsh.
“A special thanks goes to the Reverend Jean Bell and the Uniting Church who provide the kitchen and the other facilities - without them there would be no Inverell Community Kitchen.”
