AS a relative newcomer to cycling, 13 year-old Ben Fox sure is making an impact.

The quiet achiever has experienced a memorable season with top finishes in the majority of his events.

His most recent highlight being victory at the NSW Hill Climb Championships at Bathurst.

Under the guidance of experienced coach Kurt Polock, the Year 8 Holy Trinity School student, has recorded impressive times against strong fields of riders.

“Ben has definitely got a future in the sport - he has developed well and is now following a specific training program,’’ Polock said.

‘’He is a talented sportsman and is still young, so it will be interesting to see what path he takes.’’

Polock believes the key to his training is his heart rate monitor readings each day.

‘’It’s a good indication of how he is going and how much work we need to do,’’ Polock.

‘’It’s not always about how many kilometres you do each week - this is a technical approach we are taking and I believe it will benefit him.

Fox has been pleased with his racing and is now relishing the opportunities under Polock.

“I’m looking forward to doing more racing and the Tamworth Junior Tour is coming up soon, so that will be good,’’ Fox said.

Along with his success at the NSW Hill Climb, he also finished first in the Blayney to Bathurst, 3rd Bathurst criterium, 1st Sapphire City criterium, 1st Gunnedah criterium (C grade).

He has also succeeded in triathlon events. He finished first in the bike leg at the NSW All Schools Championships and named as a reserve in the NSW team.Polock will also consider starting his young charge in the Country Championships and possible the Queensland State Titles.
