Hawks soar above Superspuds

THE Inverell Hawks have prepared for their minor semi-final clash against the Uralla Tigers this weekend by beating the Guyra Superspuds on Sunday 40-16.

The Hawks easily triumphed over the Superspuds at Varley Oval, giving them hope they are strong enough to make it to the grand final.

Coach Andrew le Breton said despite having a few of their top players out with minor injuries, the game was a good warm-up for next weeks minor semi-final against Uralla.

“Guyra were always going to be a tough team, they beat us twice this season on their home turf, and I was really pleased with how the guys played, especially as we were down quite a few players.

“The reserve guys who put their hand up to play really surprised me with their skill and determination.”

“It was a game that didn’t mean anything on the ladder but Guyra were still tough, they were out of competition but they still came out and put on a good show.” Nathan Worgan, Jeremy Baxter and Nathan Guan were standout players of the match and Worgan and Baxter made a good step up to first grade.

“Nathan Worgan was actually playing in my position and he really stepped up to the plate and played well and Jeremy Baxter scored two goals for us.”

Le Breton said the Hawks would be not changing their game plan significantly before their clash with Uralla this weekend.

“At training this week we will just be concentrating on playing good footy and building our momentum.

“We have been playing well for a few weeks now and we just want to keep that going.”

The Inverell Hawkettes OzTag team have easily been made minor premiers with their convincing 8-2 win over Guyra, leading them to the major semi final in Glen Innes this weekend.

Tries: David Keyte, Geoff Searle (3), Nathan Tolley, Nathan Guan, Michael Walls, Nigel Sharpe. Goals: Jeremy Baxter (2), Nigel Sharpe and Nathan Worgan.

OzTag: Anna Akhurst (2), Karen Hubner, Abby Fox (2), Kristy O’Brien (3)
